Milan, 1990 – As a master’s student at Bocconi, Thomas Halstrick was excited by the designs the surrounding shops displayed. Watching them, he thought: Why don’t they offer designs like these on napkins?
The intuition to print napkins was no mere coincidence. Rather, it was rooted in his family’s longstanding history in paper production, spanning 4 generations and starting in 1903.
However, up until Thomas’s father Georg, the focus was placed on the mass production of paper goods. Napkins featured – if anything – classic or uni-colored prints.
Thus, inspired by Italy, Thomas founded Paperproducts Design (ppd) in 1991. He wanted to create napkins that are more than a commodity. But a design product.
Therefore, at their first trade show he and the designer Luca Bassi decided to do things a little differently.
